Are You Feeling Afraid to ...?

bev-blog-fear

While so many people are expressing their feelings of fears to me at this particular time, I am reminded of a conversation I had with Balasz Nyiri about 2 kinds of fear.

There is, what Balasz refers to, as the evolutionary role of fear. This fear impacts our survival. So people who live in forests will learn which berries are poisonous and could kill them and which are fit for consumption. Their fear of death will guide them to learn which are safe foods and which are not.

The second fear Balasz calls societal fear. This is fear which is imposed by others onto us. So you may learn in your childhood that you shouldn't sing because you don't have a nice voice. The message is you're not good enough. If you're not good enough you may fear that you won't be loved by your parents.

We learn to be afraid of many things when we're children. This fear of failure and disappointment is not necessary for our survival. However, this fear may be as strong as one's fear of dying. "If I fail at this it's like dying." this fear may even paralyze us from taking next steps to achieving our goals.

Balasz stresses that continued trying and learning from our failures is a way of realigning and reevaluating our steps. Some of us stop just before we get there.

Balasz concludes that error in your life enables you to get closer to your goals each time.
