Deep and meaningful relationships play a vital role in overall well-being. Research has proven that people with supportive and rewarding relationships have better overall mental health. An informative perspective on thriving through relationships, emphasizes two types of support that relationships can provide.
What is 'thriving'?
Relationships help individuals cope with stress or adversity, as well as support opportunities to learn, grow, explore, achieve goals, cultivate new talents, and find purpose and meaning in life. Relationships enable a person to thrive.
Thriving, I believe means having:
Two kinds of support
We thrive with well-functioning close relationships that provide different types of support with friends, parents, siblings, a spouse, or mentors.
The first important function of any of the above mentioned relationships is to support thriving through adversity,by enabling them to flourish either because of or in spite of their circumstances.
The second important function of relationships is to support thriving in the absence of adversity by promoting full participation in life opportunities for exploration, growth, and personal achievement. Supportive relationships help people thrive by encouraging the embrace and pursuit of opportunities that enhance positive well-being, broaden and build resources, and foster a sense of purpose and meaning in life.
Meaningful support is provided when the recipient feels understood, validated, and cared for.
Being able to verbalize your needs, accept support when needed, express gratitude for the support you have been given as well as provide reciprocal support, cultivate deep, meaningful and mutually caring relationships that enable us to thrive.
